We often talk about culture in a flat, one dimensional way, almost as
if it were simply a definition to be read from a stuffy page, or an item
sitting still in a cold museum. Through the layered confines of academic
discourse, culture is compartmentalized, institutionalized and synthesized;
and with these disconnecting reference points, we, as a community, can lose
sight of the need to exercise culture as a living medium through which our
history, song, dance, food and story crash together in celebration of the
currency of life and people.
Carib Fest, at its inception, was birthed from a similar need: the
strong, ancestral compass that guilds all Caribbean's had no legitimate
place to channel the roots of our rich community. And what original started
out as a simple gathering of a few, has exploded into a textured event held
annually, where people of all backgrounds come to one place to sing
Caribbean song, dance Caribbean dance, and eat Caribbean "eats". All of this
is done with passion, reverence and abandon.
We capture the summer sun in the colors of the Caribbean vocabulary.
Here in Richmond, Virginia, a canvas of culture is painted in the light.

Our Mission and Vision:
· We strive to build awareness and appreciation of the Caribbean identity and legacy.
· The contributions and talents of the Caribbean community should
be brought together in a unique forum for participants and attendees at what
is planned as a major annual event showcasing Caribbean arts, crafts,
literature, cuisine, cultural products and books about the Caribbean.
· For people not of Caribbean decent, Caribbean culture affords an
opportunity to understand and experience island life, a rich legacy that is
at the core of our people.

All over the world we see that culture has the power to bring continuity
to community. What does this mean? Simply that the craft of creativity and
imagination shower us with paintings, sculpture, song, dance, food, and story,
bringing a unifying code of self expression for all to reflect upon as a mirror
to the souls of ourselves and ancestors. As an extended family, we think, drink,
and eat Caribbean culture at one huge banquet table every August as a holiday
celebrating life.
As Chairperson of Carib Fest Plenti Celebration, I welcome you all
to sample the island life here in Richmond, Virginia during our August events.
Beryl Walters-Riley
Chairperson, Carib Fest
